5 Months Old & Swaddle Free

I slipped up on posting Ryder's 5 month photo yesterday, so here he is, and handsome as can be might I add.

On another note, since Ryder turned 5 months yesterday, we decided to give it a try without the swaddle. This is literally the first time in the history of his life that we did not swaddle him before putting him to bed. We were expecting the worse, but it really wasn't as bad as we thought. We put him down at 10 because we had a late night due to our Bible study group and he woke up at about 2 a.m. crying pretty bad. I went in there and put his paci in and he fell back asleep about 5 minutes later. Then we heard the crying at 4 a.m. but didn't go in there and he fell back asleep. Then, he finally woke up for good at 7:30 a.m., so overall I would say it was a success! However, there was a negative to this... he woke up with a cold. For whatever reason the heat doesn't put out much at all in his bedroom so we have a small plug in heater which we had on last night. I guess it just wasn't enough without the swaddle so poor baby woke up with a runny nose and a cough. We have the cool mist humidifier on tonight so hopefully he'll get better. They say not to put a blanket in the bed with babies until they are 1 year old, and I can see why because if we have even a bib in his reach, he immediately puts it over his face. So that is something I don't want to risk.
Until next time...

Well, we are now FIVE whole months old. We're wearing size 2 diapers and eating baby food. To be exact, we're on 3 tbs rice cereal mixed with 3 tbs applesauce for breakfast and half of a plastic container of green beans mixed with 3 tbs of rice cereal for dinner, along with the same amount of milk (every 3 hours or 3 1/2 if he can make it). Ryder's new trick is pulling his feet to his face and pulling his socks off. There hasn't been much rolling over action just yet, we're working on it though. For about a month now he's been so strong when we stand him up, it's almost like if we let go of underneath his arms, he could actually stand for a second. Each day I love him more and more, and have learned to thank God for him every chance I get. He is getting to be so much fun and it melts my heart every single time he smiles. It's so funny how you don't even realize it, but I'll find myself just sitting there staring at him while he's sleeping. I am in awe of everything he does. I've been reading a book called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and I'm starting to learn his signs. One thing I've learned is that the second he rubs his eyes or yawns, I need to put him down. This has worked wonders. We used to let him get overly tired and when we'd try to put him down, it was too late. He was already so mad from being so sleepy that he would scream and scream. Now, when I see the signs, I soothe him for a couple of minutes and put him in his crib and about 90% of the time he falls right to sleep. It's so important for babies to get their sleep because it can mess up their entire day if they skip a nap. Trust me, I know it's hard to sit there and listen to him cry, but I know it's best to let him just cry it out, even if it's for 5 or 10 minutes, because he always always always falls asleep. If he doesn't fall asleep within 5 or 10 minutes, I know something is wrong. Usually it turns out he just has a really big burp when I pick him up. Then, once he gets it out and I put him down again, he falls right to sleep. He is SUCH a good baby, we are truly blessed.

Forget the spoon, I'm going all in!!!

Sorry for the mess Mommy... After getting greased up with my Aquaphor. Gotta keep that face nice and smooth.

Gooooo Saints!

Rice Cereal, Jumperoo, 9 Month Clothing?

I think Ryder has hit a big ole growth spurt over night. What in the world do they put in that rice cereal?! We started giving him cereal about two weeks ago and I don't know if it's just in my head, but he looks huge! Yesterday morning I had to go into work early so I pulled out the clothes JM needed to change Ryder into before taking him to Connie's. He called me later in the day and asked why I pulled out shorts for Ryder during the winter time. I said no, those are pants... he just wore the outfit last week. When I picked Ryder up from Connie's I saw it... the poor baby was some kind of flooding. The bottom of the pants literally ended at his knee caps. What is this? I guess it's time to do some more cleaning out in the closet. I have been holding off on a whole stack of clothes that are 6-9 months for the obvious reason that he is 4 1/2 months old. Just out of boredom, I put Ryder in a 9 month outfit, fit like a charm! Don't they come to a point sometime in the first year where they kind of stay at one certain size for a while? I'm ready for that, he's growing way too fast.
On Sunday we rushed out to Babies-R-Us to buy him a Jumperoo. We were so excited we could barely wait to get home and put him in it. JM put it together in just a few minutes and it was finally time to try it out. I don't know what we were expecting, but it wasn't what we got. I think we thought he was going to be jumping like bonkers all over the place and laughing up a storm. No. He just kind of sat there and stared at us. However, he has warmed up to it over the past few days and has bent his knees a few times to make it bounce.

Big & Strong

We took Ryder for his 4 month checkup this morning, which came along with two shots. He did pretty good for having to sit in the office for two friggin hours. While we were sitting in the waiting room (which by the way is the same waiting room I sat in as a child, and strangely enough, my doctor still works for the group and I can remember being like four years old and thinking this man was soooo old with his gray hair, and he's still a doctor there today- not Ryder's though). Anyway, I was looking around at all the toys and books in the waiting room and wondering why on earth would you let your child play with these things? Children are at the doctor for a reason and those places are germ central. That just bothers me.
Well, Ryder's a big boy - weighs 14 lb 5 oz, is 25 inches long, and has a head circumference of 43 cm. When we went back to get him weighed, the nurse tech says, "Okay na, scrip him down to his pampas" - love it. I wanted to ask his doctor what that was percentile wise, but we were already there for so long and I felt bad asking any more questions, so there you go. Our main concern was his poor little sandpaper-feeling face. It has red patches all over it, is bumpy, and itches him like crazy. He is constantly scratching it and rubbing it and it's just so sad. I keep Aquaphor on him all the time but it's just not working. Dr. Penny said we could mix together Aquaphor and Hydrocortisone cream and put it on his face and his cradle cap. I am hoping this works, I'm ready for him to look and feel like a soft little baby. He's been like this since he was about three weeks old, so I've really forgotten what it was like to feel his soft skin.
She suggested I give up milk products for one week, because sometimes it causes these things in babies. Then in about two weeks I'll start him on rice cereal and two weeks after that she suggested we start him on applesauce. We've been putting him to sleep around 7:30 p.m. and waking him again around 10 p.m. to feed him one last time for the night and he makes it until 6:30 or 7 a.m., but I think we're going to try to let that last feeding be at 7:30 p.m. and just see how long he goes, since she said he needs about 12 hours of sleep anyway. In a way, I hope this works, but it's also kind of sad because I look forward to having that last bit of time together each night and rocking him to sleep. Otherwise, I'll get home with him at 5:30, feed him, then put him to bed a short while later, and that's it.
We've noticed him develop so much lately. I held him in my lap last night when we were eating dinner, and when I would bring my fork to my mouth to eat, I noticed him leaning forward puckering his lips like he wanted some, so cute. Also, we have this book that sits on my bedside table, so I always read it to him while we're sitting on the bed. JM said he pulled it out this morning to read to him and he noticed Ryder light up when he saw it. He's also shaking his rattle. He's not able to pick it up too good yet, but if I set it on his stomach and his hand is already near, he'll pick it up and lightly shake it. He's given me about 2 small laughs, nothing hysterical, just something that sounded kind of like a few "fake" laughs. He does make all kind of noises though, which are getting louder and louder. The doctor asked if he was rolling over yet, and he answer is no, and it doesn't seem like he's anywhere near doing it. When we put him on his belly for tummy time, he starts screaming. She said we've just got to do it because this is what will get him ready to roll over and even crawl. We'll work better on it.

Are we unfit parents for letting Ryder practice driving at such an early age? We were only going across town, not to Jackson or anything. Kidding, we drove about 5 houses down to our friends house for New Years Day black eyed peas!

Look at that poor little baby face, so red and scratchy, it hurts me just looking at it. I can't wait for it to be better for his sake.
